USCIS Issues ADIT (I-551) Stamps by Mail

March 17, 2023

Yesterday, USCIS announced that it would be expanding its process to obtain an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunication (ADIT) or I-551 stamp through mail service. Lawful Permanent Residents who do not have their green card and who seek temporary proof of their lawful permanent resident status may now obtain a stamped I-94 record proving their Lawful Permanent Resident status by mail by UPS or Federal Express.

Before this development, a Lawful Permanent Resident would need to call the USCIS contact center and request an info pass appointment at the local USCIS field office. They would then need to wait for a call back for an appointment, often two or three weeks later depending on the capacity of the local field office, or receive an email stating that there are no appointments available at the moment.

Lawful Permanent residents would still need to call the USCIS Contact Center number to request the ADIT stamp. However, if USCIS determines that an in-person appointment is not needed, the USCIS field office will issue the ADIT stamp on an I-94 form with a DHS Seal and a printed photo of the lawful permanent resident.

This service provides residents with access to the necessary ADIT or I-551 stamp which would prove their lawful permanent resident status for purposes of employment, travel, or obtaining local government benefits. The USCIS determines the issuance of an ADIT stamp and has the discretion to determine the validity period of the stamp based on the lawful permanent resident’s circumstances, not to exceed one year.
