LHSC’s Emma Tuohy has joined the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition (PICC). PICC is a coalition of over 60 member organizations that focuses on 4-5 specific political advocacy campaigns (as chosen by their members every two years). In June of 2019, PICC members committed to prioritizing education justice, enforcement resistance, federal immigration policy, the Driving PA Forward driver’s license project, and the Shut Down Berks campaign. The Berks County Residential Center is a detention center that specifically imprisons immigrant families, despite having their license to care for children revoked by the PA Department of Human Services in 2016. The campaign to shut down Berks has brought together multiple activist organizations and is an ongoing force in Pennsylvania immigration activism.
In addition to the political advocacy commitments of 2019, the Pennsylvania Immigration Citizenship Coalition engages in youth outreach and voter outreach for new citizens. The coalition operates a calendar of events hosted by their member organizations and also offers a number of resources for allies, educators, community activists, and youth. Emma became involved with PICC after discussing the coalition with a member of its Board of Directors. Interested by their mission and their unique emphasis on broad and meaningful collaboration, Emma jumped on board and was voted Secretary of the Board of Directors at her first PICC Board meeting.
